18 Surreal Photo Manipulations #design #photography

A portfolio by Erik Johansson, photographer and retoucher from Sweden, must be one of  the strongest contemporary examples of fine retouching. Erik creates incredible fantasy worlds that are at the same time wildly surreal photo, yet so masterfully done that you almost start believing them: “Although one photo can consist hundreds of layers I always want it to look like it could have been captured,” he says. Brilliant work!

20 New Surreal Photo Manipulations #photography #fotografia

We first introduced you to self-taught photo manipulation master Sarolta Ban (see here) 2 years ago. During this time young Hungarian artist kept progressing and created a whole bunch of new surreal photo manipulations.

Sarolta says she tries to use ordinary objects in order to create various new stories with them, and leave room for every one’s own interpretation. She doesn’t have a single pattern of work: sometimes it’s the object that she likes and plays around with, other times the artist develops the idea first.

Since the last time we talked with her, she got her work exhibited in Netherlands, Ireland, France, Poland, Luxemberg and Hungary. It didn’t go unnoticed and she even received Elle Magazine’s Young Artist Talent Award together with Qualified European Photographer award from Federation of European Photographers.

With new exhibitions and even a release of a personal photo book planned, Sarolta now has a lot less time for designing jewellery, something she used to do for living. This shouldn’t be a pity, though, since her photo manipulations are simply pieces of jewellery, too!

How Some Landscapes Photos Are Actually Made #fotography #fotografia

What does spilled paprika powder and planet Mars have in common? To a New Jersey-based artist Matthew Albanese, the visually similar color and texture of the two lead to creating a meticulous diorama of Mars, and then photographing it in a way that you wouldn’t think it’s fake. Eventually this revelation resulted in the “Strange World” series, where the artist uses various condiments to make incredible miniature landscapes that look like photos.

Matthew’s work starts by walking down the isles of the supermarkets, looking for material that he could possibly make use of. One diorama takes around a month to create, and Matthew needs around 500 shots of each of them before he’s pleased with the result. By using forced perspective, carefully planned lighting and photographing his miniatures from a specific angle, Matthew can make you believe he was actually there when the volcano erupted or the storm started.

Sketching up a pose

Now we have a detailed description of our character. The only thing left to do (and the most fun) is to bring him to life. First, let’s begin with a pose. No details yet, we just want it to be able to stand up. Like in architectural design, you can’t build a house if you don’t have a solid base to build upon, else everything will collapse.
To start building the sketch, do NOT look into details such as muscles and eyes. Use only straight or slightly curved lines and if possible, only triangles (the simplest shape you can draw!).
